Don't Lose The Music is brought to you by RNID

I work for a local authority: enforcing the Noise at work regulations

We believe that the key to enforcement lies in changing the attitudes of both employees and employers.

Changing attitudes

Many people in the music and entertainment industry still do not view loud music as a serious health and safety risk. Some members of the industry feel that there are already too many regulations and rules, which are putting a burden on the sector.

We believe that the key to enforcement lies in changing the attitudes of both employees and employers.

We want to promote these key messages to venues and duty-holders:

Over-exposure to loud music can cause permanent hearing loss. Employers have a duty to tell their staff about the risks, and to create a safe working environment.

The regs don't have to mean turning the music down, or compromising on the quality of their venue or the music. Employees can still perform all their duties while looking after their hearing.

We are also concerned that some venues have reacted to the news by getting all staff to wear disposable foam earplugs. While this can reduce noise-exposure in the short term, it may not be the best long-term solution. Check out our "Earplug myth-buster" for more information on hearing protection.
