Out on the town

A great night out with friends often involves music. Avoid the symptoms of a noise hangover the next morning by following these simple steps.

Decibel levels in nightclubs can reach 110dB - that's the equivalent of a pneumatic drill 10 feet away.

Going to a club?

  • Use chill out areas to give your ears a rest.
  • Avoid dancing or standing beside loud speakers.
  • Wear earplugs designed for clubs if you go clubbing regularly.

Going to a gig or festival?

  • Stand away from the loud speakers.
  • Take regular breaks from the music to give your ears a rest.
  • If you want to watch the main act at the front of the stage, watch the support from further back.
  • If you regularly go to gigs and/or festivals, wear specially designed earplugs.

Going to a silent disco?

  • Take regular breaks from headphones to give your ears a rest
  • Remember, headphones can reach 95dB and you can only listen safely at this volume for 15 minutes
  • On the other hand, 85dB is safe for two and a half hours, so don’t turn the music up to maximum to drown out background noise
  • Silent discos make it easier for you to control the music – so look after your hearing!

Don’t Lose the Music is working with SilentArena, the UK's premier silent disco providers, to make sure that silent discos are safer for everyone to enjoy.
