Environmental Noise regulations apply in terms of how the noise made inside a building or at an outdoor event affects the local environment. The Environmental Health Department within the local council has a duty to investigate complaints and take action if noise is considered to be a statutory noise nuisance. For contact details, search for 'Environmental Health' in your local phone book.
In terms of employees at gigs and clubs The Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 apply. The HSE has lots of information on the HSE website about the steps employers must take to safeguard the hearing of their employees.
We’re working with venues, local authorities, employees and the public to ensure the regulations are enforced and employees are protected. Find out more about the regulations, your rights and responsibilities, and what you can do to help on our Noise at Work page.
The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 applies to people who choose to visit clubs and gigs. The Act makes a general health and safety requirement on all employers to ensure persons not in their employment are not exposed to risks to their health or safety (as far as is reasonably practical).
We believe this means that venues playing loud music should provide information to their customers that allows them to make a choice to protect their hearing. We can provide posters, leaflets, flyers and much more information to help with this. See our materials order form for more details.
