Custom made earplugs, out of the box!

Recognising the crucial importance of effective hearing protection, Sensorcom has launched ProGuard: an out-of-the-box custom attenuating earplug system for DJs, musicians and concert goers. ProGuard attenuating earplugs are hand-crafted from non-allergenic, translucent soft silicon to provide long-term comfort. Fitted with calibrated acoustic filters, the earplugs will reduce the sound entering the ear to a safe level whilst maintaining acoustic integrity and without degrading the listening experience.

The ProGuard system simplifies the process of getting custom earplugs: a frequent enquiry being "where do I get my impressions done". ProGuard addresses all the concerns and processes with an information sheet that provides a comprehensive guide to the do's and dont's of customised earplugs. There are pre-paid vouchers enclosed to cover the audiologist's fees for examination, impressions and postage envelope for returning the impressions back to the ProGuard laboratory. Contact details are provided giving access to over 100 Audiology centres across the UK where the user can make an appointment local to them. There is a dedicated website for product registration, downloads and to new product information. Included in the ProGuard kit are useful ancillary products including a storage pouch, cleaning tool, earmould gel, user instructions and a unique registration number. Priced at about £100 fully inclusive, ProGuard custom earplugs are an attractive option for music professionals concerned about their hearing.

The customised earplugs take about two weeks from the time that the impressions arrive at their laboratory to being delivered back to the customer. A choice of two attenuation levels which can be selected to suit the listening environment; the lower level is designed to give adequate protection for general gigging and concert goers then a higher attenuation version for regular listeners is available for extremely high volume environments where DJs, drummers and musicians in very loud bands work.

Rob Piddington of Sensorcom managed the ProGuard project: "A lot of people want custom fit earplugs, but are confused by the process; if it hurts; where to go and what they will look like when they are made. We have created ProGuard to overcome these concerns and questions. Sound systems are becoming more sophisticated, audio levels in clubs and music venues are increasing and hearing damage is now a major concern; people need to know that ringing in the ears [tinnitus] is the ear crying for help and ignoring the warning will certainly most result in hearing problems."
